The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with the government.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to witness the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are atheists or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
So I have been heartened to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in numbers during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
